The Penguin
The Penguin is a brilliant piece of television, functioning more as a character piece than your average superhero TV-series. A perfectly grounded continuation of The Batman to set the scene for what’s to come in the world of these characters.
Colin Farrell takes the character actor route, serving as the series’ cornerstone. Even when I tried to, I couldn’t place him behind the mask of the titular character. Farrell is as engulfed in the character’s questionable morals as the audience is in the series, bringing a captivating crime saga that never feels like the slob that the superhero genre has been presenting as of late.
Cristin Milioti is the perfect off-set to Farrell as the two battle for who’s determination wins the battle for Gotham’s underworld. In general the characterizations are well played as they offer layers of morals, motivations, and convictions.
I’m usually bad at committing to TV-series, so even though it’s taken me a while to watch the entirety of The Penguin, it’s in no way a testament to its brilliance that I didn’t watch it all at once.
I’m excited to see what’s next in this world.
