This movie is sooo Marty for better or worse. Historically accurate depictions of real people doing things so crazy and terrible it seems unrealistic. Leo DiCaprio acting unhinged and freaking out. Robert Deniro saying there's nothing to worry about (there is). Characters narrating over fast paced montage sequences with snappy editing. Long tracking shots with music that sounds old-timey and period appropriate while also having an upbeat groove matching the tone of the movie. Every individual scene is incredible. Every actor is fantastic. Every technical aspect of directing, cinematography, music, editing, production and costume design is excellent and very impressive. But the only major thing that held back my enjoyment of it is that there's just too many of them. Scorcese has always been good at keeping his movies flowing at a fast pace with the help of his long time collaborator, editor Thelma Schoonmaker. Still I really felt the length of this movie as it stretches toward the 3 and a half hour mark, it feels like it needs cutting down but every scene is so good that it would be hard for anyone to agree on what to cut out. What I wouldn’t agree with is that Scorcese isn’t a great director or that any of the acting isn’t fantastic or even that any specific scene isn’t very well done but it doesn’t quite come together as a whole for me.
