Malcolm X
Stunning sad scary the first 60-90 mins is like a really woozy hazy dream-like technicolour movie and then as Malcolm faces reality and discovers himself it switches to an extremely poignant character study of a very likeable, intelligent and charismatic man and I also forgot so many times that Denzel was Denzel and not Malcolm and then I cried so much at the end but that split second where Denzel makes the choice to SMILE as he sees the shooter come for him… fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck that got me sooooooooo bad. why is nobody talking about that smile? yes i know this movie was released in 1992 SORRY
the way this movie deals with timeline, introducing events not linearly but by linking emotion and theme is so so so fucking masterful and human. my favourite example is how it swerves into a memory of his family home burning down, his dad outside the house facing the klan, us already knowing he’d be dead so soon, mirroring that with the exact moment the same thing happens to Malcolm, saving his kids from his home burning down, facing the white media, us knowing he too would be dead so soon. no no no I just.. spike.. ur mind
probably the only time I have watched a movie over 2.5 hrs where I’ve not been bored at one second, every minute felt so necessary and important
