Fallen Angels
A beneficially claustrophobic film taking place in the overpopulated cityscape of Hong Kong. Characters have flaws emphasised through visual elements such as shadows and lights to convey alienation and loneliness. Falling Angels explore its key themes through a result of failed relations and the inabilities people have in moving on, I found it created a true sense of melancholy which was a relatable feel to be loved. I love the references to Chungking Express and the pairs similarities, especially with the use of step printing, I found there were all undeniably satisfying. In my opinion I felt Chungking was Kar-wai’s better out of the two, however Fallen Angels is most definitely a very high four and has huge potential to move up after a rewatch. Absolutely loved these two movies and I’m excited to watch more of his work.
