Gattaca
I really have no negatives about this, I thought it was pretty perfect.
In this dystopian society, eugenics is utilized to create the "perfect" children. Although genetic discrimination is illegal in theory, in reality it is fully employed. Those who are deemed to be a "Valid", one who is not noticeably susceptible to basically any illness/malady, are able to get the higher-paying, more prestigious jobs, making up the upper class, while those who are not are deemed an "In-Valid".
Ethan Hawke stars as Vincent Freeman, a born In-Valid with a predicted lifespan of 30 years. In comparison, his brother Anton is "Valid", supposed to be perfect even though Vincent beats Anton at swimming races many times as a child, saving Anton from drowning one time. Vincent decides to leave home after constantly being made to feel less than by his parents, compared to Anton.
After working as a janitor for Gattaca Aerospace, with the dream of being able to go to space, he is connected via the black market with Jerome Morrow, played by Jude Law, a Valid who is supposed to be perfect but got paralyzed one day after purposely standing in front of a moving vehicle. Jerome offers to house Vincent in his luxurious home and provide his genetic material in exchange for Vincent being able to work as an astronaut at Gattaca, thus bringing home a source of income for Jerome. Essentially, every day before undergoing the many detectors at work (such as blood pricks), Vincent has to vigorously scrub himself and remove any trace of himself while adding on Jerome's DNA so he passes as a Valid.
The film is a fight against authority as a murder of a Gattaca employee leads to speculation of an In-Valid sneaking into the facilities. With extra security procedures and checks, Vincent has to try desperately at every moment to not get caught. Vincent over time befriends and falls for his co-worker Irene (played by Uma Thurman), and together they flee after Vincent is seemingly caught. However, with some help from Jerome and Irene, and since Vincent did not commit the murder but rather a fellow Gattaca employee, Vincent is able to throw off the detective. In a plot twist, the detective is later revealed to be an adult Anton, having recognized Vincent but decides to keep Vincent's secret so he can travel to space. I love the ending- Vincent is caught as an In-Valid by the doctor he was seeing and maintained a relationship with, and the doctor, who relates with having a sick child, just lets Vincent go to the space flight and changes the scanner to say it was Jerome.
A lot of my 5-stars are that rating because they move me in one way or another, but this was just an excellent movie that I found incredibly captivating. Jude Law especially, along with Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman, give great performances. The score is great, along with the cinematography/visuals. The plot is interesting and well-written. Just a great movie.
