Get Out
Masterpiece.
This movie is just amazing. It has such good social commentary and I love the performances.
It’s just incredibly well-written. The deer at the beginning foreshadowing Chris’ trouble. The routine heightened questioning and mistreatment of Black people by police. The appropriation of Black culture by White people, including White Democrats (who attempt to justify their actions by justifying it as admiration). The mirroring of slave auctions and the usage of Black bodies without their consent/autonomy and removing their personalities. Achieving this through manipulation by powers of authority (in this case, an experienced psychiatrist). The Sunken Place as an analogy for the trauma our mind wants to hide from us. The fact that Chris frees himself by picking at the cotton chair.
The performances are consistently great across the board. Daniel Kaluuya as Chris Washington is a standout- he is so good at portraying the subtle anxiety of meeting the armitages, he feels so real, and then his break down scene when he first goes into the Sunken Place is amazing. Allison Williams as Chris’ gf Rose Armitage gives an underrated performance- so believably caring and compassionate to easily switching to cold and creepy in a heartbeat. And shoutout to Betty Gabriel as Georgina- her scene where the real person inside Georgina is trying to break free and communicate with Chris but is trapped is so good. It feels like they give every major cast member a moment to shine.
Also another moment stuck in my head where Chris is going upstairs from a room full of chatter and all the party guests suddenly go completely silent, staring in his direction.
