Moonstruck
I really liked this movie.
Cher stars as Loretta Castorini, a widower who lives with her parents Cosmo (played by Vincent Gardenia) and Rose (played by Olympia Dukakis) in Brooklyn, along with her grandparents. After the untimely loss of her husband being hit by a bus, Loretta accepts the proposal from her boyfriend Johnny (played by Danny Aiello), although she admittedly tells her mom that she likes him, not loves him (which Rose approves of though to avoid emotional attachment and the potential pain that Loretta dealt with her in her first marriage).
With his mother dying, Johnny decides to visit her in Sicily, before asking Loretta if she can make amends with his younger brother Ronny (played by Nicolas Cage) and invite him to the wedding. Ronny is a hot-headed guy who has a feud with Johnny due to Johnny coming into Ronny's work (making bread), asking him to make a sandwich in an incident where Ronny was distracted and sliced off his own hand, leading to his fiancee dumping him and Ronny holding Johnny responsible. While Ronny is initially dissatisfied at Loretta's presence, he accepts her invitation to talk privately, and they end up making love in a heat of a moment situation. Loretta, now worried at the thought of another marriage going wrong, tells Ronny she will meet him that night at the opera if he agrees to not come to the wedding and never show his face again, which he agrees.
At the same time, we have Cosmo, a very traditional man who is married 52 years to Rose. It is found out though that Cosmo has been cheating on Rose, and, at the opera, Loretta catches Cosmo cheating on Rose while Cosmo catches Loretta cheating on Johnny, leaving the two in an uncomfortable situation. Loretta ends up spending the night with Ronny. Rose, left alone to herself that night, ends up having dinner with a professor (Perry) who is repeatedly in arguments with his student that is dating and who leaves him in the middle of dinner, and the two discuss why men cheat, to which Rose says is due to a fear of death. As Perry walks Rose home, she is caught by her father, although this is clearly not the same as with Loretta and Cosmo.
The morning after at breakfast, the Castorini family, joined by Ronny, basically unfolds all of the drama as Rose calls out Cosmo for his cheating, which he immediately agrees to stop, and as Loretta prepares to confess her sins to Jonny (who has arrived home early due to his dying mother suddenly recovering), he says he no longer wants to marry her so he can keep his mother alive. I love it when the grandfather is crying because he is so confused at all of the shifting dynamics.
Overall, the movie is very silly and outrageous but in a good way. A lot of funny moments, with great performances by Cher and Olympia Dukakis. It's kind of heartwarming in a way, just the dynamic of the family and how no one is really villainized in the end, more that while there were infidelities that were addressed, it was also about taking a second chance at life and being adventurous. The soundtrack is great too. My one ding was for a romantic comedy due to the nature of the film's events we really didn't get much romance between Loretta and Ronny (also idk if they have the greatest chemistry), they kind of just make love immediately lol. Overall though very nice watch.
