Digger
Celebration Cinema, GR
I really liked the weirdness of this. I went in thinking it would basically be Digger and the government trying to solve the glacier problem in a “Don’t Look Up” type story, but boy was I wrong.
The first act up until the first glacier hits was amazing, and I loved the way the entire movie was filmed. The cinematography is beautiful. I also enjoyed the play within the movie concept as a way of showing what happened to this world and how they got to that point. I appreciate they brought the idea full circle, opening the bunker at the end so we finally see what that world had become.
For as weird as it gets, there’s a lot here that feels very real. Politicians and businessmen ignoring climate change until it directly affects their money or someone they love feels like exactly the road we’re heading down. I also liked what it had to say about our relationship with oil, we hate these companies and monopolies, but we all continue using their products because oil is everywhere and embedded in our lives. That doesn’t mean there isn’t a better way to do things though.
The entire tribunal sequence was probably my favorite part of the movie. Tom Cruise is fantastic and somehow manages to make this weird, shitty businessman incredibly likable. Definitely a performance worthy of a nomination. John Goodman and Riz Ahmed were great as well.
Funny, weird, beautifully shot, and different from what I expected. A good film with a stellar Cruise performance that I’ll definitely rewatch down the line.
