Ruby Sparks
I thought this would be just another 500 days of summer. Nobody could love this movie the way I do. Possibly because I see myself in both Ruby and Calvin but as much as there was an obvious archetype they had there was also depth and complexity behind it. It could have ended right when Calvin typed the words “She was free”, just to show that these kinds of movies only end when the manic pixie dream girl leaves and the protagonist becomes a whole person. It would’ve been cinematic but I love how it just didn’t. In the end we still don’t see how “free” defines Ruby Sparks, or if it makes her any more real—but I like to think the point of the ending was to show that Calvin was the one who was unequivocally free.
