Coherence
This film makes you feel that something is not right constantly without anyway to fix it. multi-universe allegory as a way to show how the actions we do (or don't) make in life can have irrevocable repercussions. It's not so much about "which Em is which?" as it is the simple fact that Em hesitated, regretted her decision, tried to backtrack, but it was already too.
Here are some responses from Reddit that really describe the plot and metaphors well:
1. The people that arrive at the dinner party are already from different worlds. This is why there is confusion about whether Mike was in Roswell and whether Laurie did yoga.
There seems to be good and bad versions of people. They are best identified by the door that goes nowhere. If they use that door they are the evil version or at least have “unresolved issues. “ Think Hugh pounding on the door. Think Em coming back into the house through the door after killing Em2. The comet itself is bad, as a picture of the sister that played Haley’s comet in a school play is near the door. “It is like a vortex.” The image of Amir was “taken from the door” foreshadowing his turn to the other side.
Mike is a former alcoholic. He is worried that the alcoholic version of Mike, Mike2, will come and kill him. This actually happens. You see the transition when Mike2 goes directly to the liquor cabinet and his whereabouts are questioned by Kevin. Mike realizes that he cannot improve is plight despite changing worlds because the problem is his own version of Mike, not random bad luck. “I am losing it over there, I am losing it here. “ and when Em confronts him with her realization, he starts laughing because he already knows that Le is not his real wife.
Hugh never really returns after he and Amir first leave, probably dead like the others which why when they first come back Hugh is beat up from the fight. Hugh is hesitant to reveal what he saw….because he is hiding it. Note that on the second return he spits it out right away. After the four blue team members return from the field trip, Hugh and Amir appear to be part of the red team and start communicating in private with each other. Yet in Amir2 and Hugh2’s world, they do not know about the book. That is why when Kevin starts to figure this out, there is a shot of both Amir and Hugh giving an “oh sh*t” look. Hugh2 also refuses to help the blue team from preventing the red team from finding the book. Later, we see that the red glow sticks are used as a sign for each other that they are still alive and together, right before they steal the box and leave out the door that goes nowhere.
4b. When the 4 blue team members come back from their field trip it is to a new house. We know this because the glass that was broken before is now fixed again.
5. The Em that we know is basically the evil or at least an unlucky version of Em, kinda like Mike2. Initially she does not realize everyone she knows are alternative versions of themselves. But she comes to realize that when she abruptly meets Keven2 by her car….who together realize something is up when they have different memories. And again with Kevin3 who soon after in the house does not remember the significance of the ring and also is holding Laurie when Em is making her exit out the door. Her female friends are also shown to be imposters when the whole “I picked this up at Galaxy” exchange recurs, but she is the only one that remembers the original conversation. Em also makes a psychological break up with Keven after it is revealed that Laurie has been carrying and photo of Keven for years and years. We see this when Em cuts the photo in two. So now Em is no longer looking for her Kevin. He is long gone. She is looking for the best life she can experience.
6. Despite Em’s best efforts, she will still not become famous. Once everyone leaves through the door to nowhere in the “good” version of her life, someone mentions that her understudy will cover for her while she is away for a month while in Vietnam with Keven. I think the implication is that the end result will be the same. She will be overshadowed by her understudy and will have the same career path she currently has. In other words, she committed murder for no reason. Likewise, the original Em’s indecisiveness will still plague her, unlike Em2 who already said yes to 1 month.
And Hugh toast to the “life that we do lead,” implying that it is not our circumstances or luck that is important but how we respond to life’s choices.
EDIT: just found out this movie was shot in only 5 days, WOW!
EDIT 2: there was no true script for this movie. All the actors were prompted, but no one knew any of the others directions to keep the movie authentic.
