Spider-Man 2
Continuing the marathon with what many consider the crown jewel of Raimi’s trilogy and I get why. Spider Man 2 takes everything the first film built and deepens it. It’s not just about Peter learning to be a hero; it’s about what it costs him to stay one. The rent overdue, grades slipping, MJ slipping further away its a story of sacrifice dressed up as a superhero blockbuster, and it lands beautifully.
Tobey Maguire really settles into the role here. He balances Peter’s vulnerability and frustration without losing that dorky charm. Kirsten Dunst gets more space to shine as MJ, finally stepping into her own instead of just playing the love interest. And Alfred Molina as Doctor Octopus? Incredible. He’s tragic, brilliant, and sympathetic in a way that makes him one of the most memorable comic book villains ever put on screen.
Raimi’s horror roots peek through in the hospital scene, and the action set pieces still impress today.. the train fight especially is a masterclass in pacing, tension, and emotional payoff. It’s not just Spider Man stopping a runaway train.. it’s New York embracing him, literally carrying him when he can’t carry himself anymore. That moment will never get old.
There’s no denying that Spider Man 2 captures something special: the struggle of balancing humanity and heroism in a way few superhero films ever have.
A near perfect sequel, and easily one of the best superhero movies ever made.
