Aftersun is a movie that simply cannot be described, everyone that trully understanded the story will know what i mean.
If you read the plot before watching it you will be always thinking something bad will happen, like when the bus honks at Paul Mescal and he dissapears, this hidden details are the ones that make this film not as simple as any other, but in fact a really complex and well done one.
The ending can be really difficult to understand at first, the reveal that its actually grown up Sophie watching old videos of her with her dad, this is showing us he's gone and that was probably their last time together.
The theory about the father's depression is probably the most logical one but i like to believe he was terminally ill, he knew he was going to die, thats the reason why he recorded evertyhing with his camera, to not be forgotten by his daughter, also thats why he couldn't sleep, was always tired and why he cried when Sophie asked him to not make promises he couldn't achieve when he talked about plans in the future, even though she was talking about the money.
The scene on the last day of the vacation when they dance and adult Sophie hugs her father is one of the most devastating things i will probably ever see on a film, i cannot listen to "Under pressure" and not think about this movie. It moved something on me i didn't even knew it was there.
This is my first serious review and writing it actually helped me to understand more about this film, i hope it helps you too reading it.
Thanks,
