Superman

I haven’t seen a film this brimming with optimism and hope in a while and it was incredibly refreshing. Superman is a great film. The biggest issue it had going for it is that it throws a lot at you and not all of it sticks. However, the elements that do stick are so incredibly fantastic and heartfelt. Practically everything is firing on all cylinders. The weakest part would be the writing. Again, since they throw a lot at you there is some lackluster exposition but it’s not bad, just distracting. The acting, characters, and action are all fantastic. Even lesser characters have solid development. The comedy is solid. It’s not as good as Gunn’s other works but it’s still enjoyable and there are still a good bit that got me to laugh out loud. The highlight is easily the themes. The reason why Superman is a beacon of hope is shown expertly with this film. With so many different media portraying evil Superman it’s nice to have a genuine good natured take again. Maybe I’ve been watching too many depressing movies but Superman was just such an incredibly refreshing film I can’t help but love it, flaws and all.
