Moonlight
This movie is the most powerful portrayal of how hard it is to be yourself in a world that doesn’t let you. I love this movie because of how it does a great job of making deep, well written characters who make for a very powerful story. Chiron is the perfect embodiment of loneliness and pressure and it’s so cool but sad to see how the lack of love he gets shapes him over time. Chiron is put in such a terrible situation with his dad being gone his mom being unstable and when Juan dies he loses his only source of love. This is sad but it makes for a very interesting and deep story and It was super fascinating to see how he hardened himself in the final act of the movie. I love the character Juan so much because even though he’s such a good father figure and he helps Chiron in many ways he’s not perfect. This makes it feel way more real and adds to depth of the movie. I love how Chiron models himself after Juan, it was a very good touch to his transformation in the end. Kevin is a very well written character and it’s cool how he mirrors Chiron, but hides himself in different ways. When they were younger Kevin was able to hide himself socially in ways the Chiron couldn’t which made it easier for him at the time. When they got older Kevin felt free to express himself with his cooking and new lifestyle which makes it easier for him to break through Chirons hardened facade. There are so many emotional moments in this movie but one of my favorite ones is when Chiron is grown up and he goes back to his mom because it’s the first time you a good side to the character that caused Chiron so much pain.
