Psycho
Psycho is one of those movies that completely lives up to its reputation. Not only does it have one of the greatest twists in film history, but it also manages to keep the audience uncomfortable and uncertain for almost its entire runtime. Even though so many aspects of the movie have become iconic over the years, the story is still incredibly effective because of how carefully Alfred Hitchcock builds suspense and misdirects the audience. What impresses me most is how bold the movie is. Hitchcock constantly plays with the audience’s expectations and takes the story in directions that feel shocking even by today’s standards. The tension is present in almost every scene, and the movie proves that suspense can often be far more effective than outright horror. Rather than simply relying on violence, it creates fear through anticipation, and the feeling that something is deeply wrong beneath the surface. Anthony Perkins gives an incredible performance that is a huge reason the movie works as well as it does. His portrayal is unsettling, sympathetic, and disturbing all at the same time, which makes the mystery surrounding his character even more compelling. Every interaction feels layered, and the performance becomes even more impressive once you know the full story. As great as the twist is, the ending is what truly elevates the movie for me. The final scene is, in my opinion, the greatest closing scene of any movie. It’s haunting, unforgettable, and perfectyl acted. Few movies have endings that are this iconic, and even fewer have endings that are this effective..
