Sinners
This is exactly my type of horror movie. Instead of relying on constant jump scares, Sinners keeps you on edge through suspense, tension, and a feeling that something terrible is always right around the corner. The movie is thrilling from start to finish, and once everything starts coming together, it becomes almost impossible to pause. One of the movie’s greatest strengths is its music. Not only are the songs incredible, but the score and background music are just as important. Every musical choice feels perfectly placed and helps create the environment that makes the movie so effective. Combined with the stunning visuals, the music gives many scenes an almost dreamlike quality while still maintaining the tension. There were multiple moments where the combination of the cinematography and soundtrack completely blew me away. Michael B. Jordan delivers an outstanding performance and brings a lot of emotion to the movie. His characters feel believable and complex, which makes it much easier to become invested in what happens to them. The supporting cast is excellent as well, and the movie takes enough time to develop its characters before throwing them into the chaos. I will admit that the beginning is a little slow, but I think it’s completely necessary. The extra time spent with the characters allows you to understand who they are and makes you care about them much more once the horror elements begin to take over. Without that setup, many of the later moments wouldn’t have nearly the same impact. One scene that really stood out to me was the sequence involving the Native Americans tracking the vampire. Even though it doesn’t end up playing a huge role later in the story, I found it incredibly mysterious and fascinating. It added another layer to the world and made it feel like there were larger stories and histories existing beyond what we were directly shown. Small details like that are part of what makes the movie feel so rich and memorable. Sinners succeeds because it works on so many different levels at once. It’s scary, suspenseful, visually stunning, emotionally engaging, and filled with great performances. It’s one of the most unique horror movies I’ve seen in a long time and easily one of my favorites of recent years.
