Heathers

it’s been like seven years since i’ve seen this and it was obviously awesome. over the years i had retained all of the really important plot stuff but forgotten just how stylized it is and how good the script is. i’m so obsessed with everything heather chandler says, she really is that girl. one aspect of this that i really love though is the sense of familiarity between veronica and other students. she’s not completely isolated with the heathers and she’s not a complete loser like martha, she has acquaintances all over the place. i think that that adds and element of realism to this very surreal world, where there are cliques but not in a cartoonish way. also the release of mean girls (2024) has me watching a movie like heathers, which also has a musical adaptation, and coming to the same realization: these musical adaptations are bad. mean girls more so because the music is also bad, but the changes made to the plot of heathers when adapted to stage fundamentally change the story for the worst. at least the music in heathers: the musical is good, specially i would still endorse “our love is god” as one of the best songs.
