Materialists
judging everyone who said this was just a rom-com!!
i went in knowing it wouldn’t be your standard cute movie. céline song loves messy, sad, slightly awkward love, and this is exactly that. but somehow it still is a romance, in that quiet, complicated, kind-of-real way that hits you when you least expect it.
the movie talks about what we want from others and what we give ourselves, about how we show up in relationships carrying checklists and expectations instead of just… feeling. lucy’s energy, her conversations with clients, the tiny things in her relationships with harry and john, like leaving without saying goodbye, noticing differences without ever saying a word, those are the moments that stuck with me. i could watch a whole series of just that.
honestly, i kinda wanted lucy to end up alone. she’s complicated and materialistic, and i love that she’s not neatly for harry or john. but after all the moments john gives her, the little speeches, the care he shows… i forgive it. it’s supposed to be easy, right? lucy even says it herself: when it’s meant to be, it’s easy.
