Darren Lynn Bousman’s familiar combination of whirlwind emotional beats that are cranked up to infinity (further proven by Saw’s 2-4 daytime soap dramatics and his three attempts at over-the-top energetic horror operatics) and grueling depravity that is almost too much to bare in the moment—a descent into morally corrupt and vile antagonists tormenting a seemingly idyllic picture-perfect hangout between friends where there’s hidden layers beneath them all that allows an almost two hour runtime to be acceptable in this case. A remake without ever feeling like one (a recontextualized version in the same vein as Nispel’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake), and a rarely seen flick that’s still unfathomable to me. A one of a kind home invasion thriller sparked from the Saw sequels whereas events and storylines are comparable to Saw III, maybe an inspiration or a coincidence? Everyone gives it their all (especially Jaime King and De Mornay) and it shows! ALWAYS ON THE RUN—SEARCHING FOR BETTER, BUT NOW, I’M COMING HOME.
