don’t forget me, like the tunnel under ocean boulevard i will always love this little book. it hurt me and felt like a kiss. nastenka taught the dreamer how to love— but loving her would never be enough. “her heart was brimming with love to that other man.” the other (wo)man. this is such a good adaption of the novel. i simply feel happy that it’s so accurate and it’s exactly how i imagined it to be. this movie was heartbreakingly accurate. the pain, the pain in the dreamer’s eyes..nastenka crying…it was beautiful. nastenka was also so gorgeous. her hair and dresses and general facial features were so stunning. ill copy up my white nights quotes and etc in further detail when my own copy (which ive lent to my friend for the time being) is returned. all in all, i think this is one of the best adaptions of a book ive watched in a long while!!—“i stood there looking at the light until it went out.” —“i cannot be silent anymore. i must speak at last!” —“nastenka, nastenka, my nastenka!” —“i am so happy, so happy! my God, how happy i am!” “may your sweet smile be bright and untroubled, and may you be blessed for that moment of blissful happiness which you gave to another lonely and grateful heart.”

it’s completely unfair that woody allen made this film, because i love it so. “it has universality but no objectivity.” again, im completely besotted with the cinematography, the costuming, the lighting and the sheer amount of emotional nostalgia conveyed! i love this film especially for its portrayal of the twenties in paris. the nostalgia i feel akin with gil is something else. nostalgia is all i can think of sometimes. i feel the same as gil about everything…i love this movie so much. what gil says about nostalgia and trying to escape our present reminds me of a tiktok comment i saw about it; “we’re all living in someone else’s golden era— let’s enjoy it for them.” this movie was my escapism, for it applies to everything. i read to escape my reality, i watch movies to escape my reality, i listen to music to escape my reality. what i should be doing is living; but as of now, i am only surviving. —“wonderful, but forgettable.” —“dripping with sexual innuendo, carnal to the point of smouldering and yes, she’s beautiful, but it’s a subtle beauty, an implied sensuality.” —“i think a woman is equal to a man in courage.” — “artists are like children.” —“all cowardice comes from not loving, or not loving well, which is the same thing.” —“if its bad, ill hate it because i hate bad writing. if its good, ill be envious and hate it even more.” —“every street, every boulevard is its own special art form.” —“and when you think that in the cold, violent meaningless universe, that paris exists…these lights..i mean come on, there’s nothing happening on jupiter or neptune..but from way out in space you can see these lights, the cafes, people drinking and singing. for all we know, paris is the hottest spot in the universe.” —“you’re very kind, but i wouldn’t call my babbling poetic.” —“you inhabit two worlds. i see nothing strange.” —“i see a photograph. i see a film.i see an insurmountable problem. i see…a rhinoceros.” —“the artist’s job is not to succumb to despair but to find an antidote for the emptiness of existence.” —“you have a clear and lively voice, don’t be such a defeatist.” —“but i did feel, for a minute there while i was doing it, like i was immortal.” —“well it’s the present, it’s dull.” —“this is the time we live in.“—“i was trying to escape my present the same way you're trying to escape yours to the golden age.” —“i have to get rid of my illusions, and that i’d be happier in the past is one of them.” —“it was a bad decision, but at least it was a choice.” “that’s, you know, what the present is. it’s a little unsatisfying because life’s a little unsatisfying.”

this was very fun to watch! its a bit of the ordinary three mean girls, one gets adopted and transformed to be one of them trope but i loved the carrie sort of elements weaved into the story! easy to watch and consume, the aesthetics were cute too and especially fern (either as herself or vylette, her outfits rocked each time). i just wish we got more heavier consequences given to courtney/an after cut because i wanted people running away from courtney and not just throwing things at her- this girl is a murderer! i loved loved loved fern and i really wish they shed some light on the backstory of fern’s sort of obsession with liz and the dynamics with both fern and liz and fern and julia because that was some lesbian tension there, i know it.

“is it a video?” rewatched whilst annotating my own copy.
