Before Sunset
i know. “maybe what i’m saying is the world might be evolving like a person evolves. right? like, i mean me, for example. am i getting worse? am i improving? i don’t know.”
i like sunset a slight bit more than sunrise, but what i really love about sunset is how much darker it is. it’s so much more about the loss of hope and how romance can bring us down and almost ruin us, where sunrise is about the hope love gives us and the happiness that comes with it. i especially love julie delpy’s performance, but more than anything, the cab scene is fucking incredible. the conversation. the facial expressions. how it’s not just focused on celine’s face but how we also see how jesse reacts to how miserable celine is and how he feels miserable for her feeling that way.
i love the darker undertones of sunset. it’s much more philosophical and seemingly hopeless than sunrise, and how it flips the theme from sunrise’s “love is this amazing thing that can randomly be found between two strangers and it should be celebrated” to sunset’s “love is complicated and it’s not just this easy thing that lasts forever and it’s delicate and fleeting and can be lost as easily as it’s found”. sunset is, for me, almost a 50/50 between a philosophical film and a romance film. i love the quotes that could be pulled from this, the conversations throughout the movie are amazing (albeit a tad mundane at some parts but it’s very negligible) and a lot of what’s said is very heavy, but very relatable. i’m almost rambling at this point so i’ll wrap it up here.
“the concept is absurd. the idea that we can only be complete with another person is evil! right?”
