Napoleon
“both masters and pupils disliked this fiercely proud child, who lived amongst them in wild isolation.”i mean where do i even begin? what can i say about this 5 and a half hour masterpiece that hasn’t already been said? it’s just fucking awesome! everything about it is nothing short of astonishing. the color symbolism, the shots themselves, it’s all just incredible. truly ahead of its time, its influence is still visible in movies being made today. the dream sequence where napoleon imagines former revolutionary leaders speaking to him, THE TRIPTYCH SHOTS MY GOD, it’s awe inspiring to see a film as epic as this be made 96 (!!!) years ago.
“i am so unhappy here. my heart is not made for those who surround me.”quick shoutout to kevin brownlow, without who none of this would have been possible. i don’t even care that this movie is 5 and a half hours long or that it took me 3 days to watch, it’s just incredible. i’ve always loved napoleon and his era of history/french history, so just watching this for me personally is nothing short of amazing. i truly wish kubrick followed through with his napoleon film, but having this masterpiece is just as good. has to be one of the greatest endings i’ve ever seen in any movie, ever.
“in this feverish reaction of life against death, a thirst for joy seized the whole of france.”
“fragments of a great event, seen from a tiny room.”
