This is where my first cycle of watching all of Tarkovsky’s films comes to an end, and it has undoubtedly left a lasting mark on my life and on the way I see it. I couldn't have asked for a better way to finish than with a dream brought to life on film. One whose purpose isn't to make you understand it, but to make you feel it—just like a dream does. No matter how surreal a dream may be, when it touches something deep within you, you feel it a thousand times more intensely.
I don't have much to say about the film, except that I'll be coming back to it many more times. I feel that only through revisiting it will its impact continue to grow and intensify with each viewing.
“Has it ever occured to you that plants can feel, know, even comprehend..? It doesn't matter which one, they don't run about. Like us who are rushing, fussing, uttering banalities... That's because we don't trust the nature that is inside us. Always this suspiciousness, haste, and no time to stop and think.”
“I think it's good to keep silent for a while. Words can't express everything a person feels. Words are flaccid.”
Tarkovsky always leaves us with beautiful words and reflections, all expressed in a poetic form. And as he also put it, art cannot truly be translated without losing part of its soul in the process. It has to be lived and experienced.
Thank you, Tarkovsky, for leaving us with all these mosaics of time.
