Before Midnight
The dialogue and conversation in this trilogy is what stood out to me the most. The conversations, and small mannerisms and awkwardness from the first movie down to the last felt so raw and authentic.
I know the selling point of these now is their rawness but, I didn’t know that this morning when I went into these blind.
Maybe watching these back to back was not the correct choice, I’m not sure.
As someone who consumes romantic movies routinely, this is by far the only one I could really say feels like reality. Yet it’s so far from reality. It’s the closest I think fiction can get to reality - in a romance movie.
But I also don’t want to really boil these movies down to being ‘romance movies’. They’re much more. It was watching life happen and time pass, really. I thoroughly enjoyed this trilogy and will, one day, maybe in a decade or so, revisit these movies.
Maybe I will pick up on different aspects of the movies. Maybe I will find their livelihoods in Sunset more relatable.
Then, maybe, I’ll pick it up again when I’m in my forties.
