Aftersun
"I think it’s nice that we share the same sky, if I can see the sun, I think about the fact that we can both see the sun, so even though we're not actually in the same place and we're not actually together, we kind of are in a way, you know? we're both underneath the same sky so... we're kind of together"sigh, note to self, don’t watch this when you’ve had a rough week... or maybe do. I wanna give my parents the biggest hug after this. the type of film that you just sit in silence for half an hour after and just think. destroyed me so many times, Paul Mescal with a brilliant performance, along side his on screen daughter played by Frankie Corio, it feels like i was really watching a real family.
amazing directorial debut from Charlotte Wells, stunning use of reflective shots in a film all about memories and reflection. the musical choices made in this really bring out the emotion. the somber sounds during some of the shots alone is a enough to make me tear up. a really subtle detail that i absolutely adored is that you here every every single breath, it really shows the power and feel behind those silent scenes that dont explicitly describe the emotion, rather you feel it.
as a kid, you dont really know how much your parents do for you, or how much they sacrifice for you. you never can truly grasp their emotions or how they feel because i mean well obviously you’re just a child, you dont understand that at all and even still it takes a while to learn that as you get older. this film really puts that on display.
Sophie trying to piece together what she can remember from her father, through a small amout of video tapes from a trip they took together, but thats all she has, realizing her father may not have been as okay as she thought he was, but thats not the picture he painted for her, and thats not what she saw when she was a little girl, he put his daughter first, and his pain suffering and despair second. thats how important and scary and hard being a parent is, just excellent fucking story telling here from the rave to the actual video camera footage, sigh.
life changer, once in a lifetime, i am sobbing.
