mother!
Quickie Review Well, my anxiety has been raised to new levels. Thanks, Aronofsky. You damn sadist. Anyway, the story follows the tranquil existence of a middle aged poet (Javier Bardem) and his doting wife (Jennifer Lawrence) being interrupted by the arrival of a couple (Ed Harris & Michelle Pfeiffer) and a chain of events soon lead to more uninvited guests and those uninvited guests begets guests and guests and guests. Until it all erupts in violent chaos. Every moment everything is ratcheted up is where I felt a little too uneasy. The fact that there’s no musical score (save for Michael Giacchino’s Paramount Pictures jingle at the start and Patti Smith’s cover of “Don’t They Know It’s The End of the World?” towards the end) didn’t make the viewing experience any less easy either. Some might think that this is mere hyperbole and I’m just exaggerating but I always had the same fear as Lawrence’s character: too many people crowding in the same place you call home. Having some people around is good but too many people is a nightmare, especially for someone like myself. And yes, I did get the religious allegory and connected the dots towards the end. mother! is definitely not an easy and digestible watch but it’s worth watching once.
