Babylon
This feels like the movie Chazelle was always supposed to make. Only someone with such a passion for cinema and such an energetic style could even come close to pulling this off. Not only does he pull it off, in my opinion, he makes one of the most epic, ambitious love letters (send-offs?) to cinema a masterpiece of little comparison.
One of the most excessive, depraved, and wildly enjoyable movies I've seen in ages. The energy is unlike any movie I've seen, it's incredibly infectious. It made the movie fly by, 3 hours felt like barely 2. The performances here are all top-notch, and it's a damn shame Diego Calva didn't rise to stardom after this. Margot Robbie is at the top of her game here.
Undeniably at the toppest of their game is Chazelle. Holy SHIT he directs the fuck out of this. Every single frame, from the production to the editing to the lighting, everything, is just superb. While a case could def be made for any of his movies, this is in my humblest opinion, the movie that makes the most of his style. It creates such an energy that just can't be matched anywhere, but when he brings it down, it works just as well. Jack's last one-take was just unreal.
I do not say this lightly, but this is my favorite Chazelle.
This is my favorite movie about movies.
This is Babylon.
