Winter Light
i was struggling to find a version of this film with working subtitles, which obviously wasnt intentional, but it certainly added a unique position for me to view this film. at least for the first 13 minutes, i didn't need a translation, i already knew exactly what was being spoken based on the environment and body language alone. the our father. the consumption of body and blood. going in peace. there's something so hypnotic about watching something that you have experienced time and time again. you can pick apart things that maybe you wouldn't have picked up upon as a child who was more interested in going home and playing pokemon x than the people around them. the lifeless stares of a broken man trying to live his life, preaching rhetorics he doesn't even believe to everyone yet no one at the same time. everyone else is too preoccupied trying to live their own lives to listen, focusing on their betterment, detriment, or being completely absentminded. obsessed with a worthless pursuit. struggling with purpose. licking the pews. im seven years out from the last time i attended church for anything besides a funeral, but all of those feelings were still clear as day and transcended spoken language. foreign yet familiar, a glimpse into what could have continued with no benefit to me.
anyway all that to say ingmar did it again
