A Clockwork Orange
From a technical aspect, this movie is a masterpiece. Shot and framed in a really interesting, but beautiful way. Starting with the initial shot of the classic close up “Kubrick Stare”, to wide angle shots used throughout to create discomfort. I especially love the way shadows are used throughout, creates a sense of eeriness. The costume design and set designs are also incredible too. They are iconic, and really make it so you understand this world that we are in, and how it is dystopian, without giving that (unnecessary) explanation.
Obviously this is anchored by McDowell’s iconic performance as Alex. As well as his narration. But that doesn’t mean the rest of the cast isn’t great as well. They left no room for subtlety in this, when it comes to acting, the themes at hand, or on the technical side. But I do think that’s why the film works.
I totally understand why people may think this movie is too much. Or that it deals with its heavy content in a way that is inappropriate. But for me, it works as (I think) intended. There are no good guys here.
