Aftersun
Holy shit. I don't think I've ever sat in more silence after a film ended. Aftersun wrecked me. It's a slow burn, but beneath every quiet moment is a weight you don't notice until it crushes you.
This movie never really feels "happy." There's always a shadow, a gesture or a reflection that always hints at what Calum is going through. The scene where Sophie asks about his 11th birthday, and we see his reflection through the TV? That scene broke me. I don't know what is what but it just made me so sad. I couldn't stop noticing the reflections show up, like the film is constantly asking you to look deeper. One of my other favorite scenes was when they sing happy birthday to him and after he cries about it. That scene also made me so sad.
It's beautiful and devasting. A film about memories that will always be in my memory.
I can't see myself at 40, to be honest. Suprised I made it to 30." Such a gut wrenching quote.
