Barbie
"My job? Just beach. It's SO hard."
It's actually crazy that my last watched film was Oppenheimer and now I'm watching Barbie. Somehow that timing feels perfect.
When I first heard about Barbie, I honestly thought it was just going to be a cash grab using one of the biggest toy brands in the world. I'm glad I was wrong because it's actually a pretty solid movie.
Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling both deliver great performances as Barbie and Ken, balancing the comedy with the more emotional moments surprisingly well. The set design is also incredible. Every time the camera cuts back to Barbieland, it genuinely feels like you're stepping into a real version of the toy world.
The best part of the film for me is easily the satire. Most of the jokes landed, and I found myself laughing throughout. The humor is what makes the movie so entertaining. The soundtrack, on the other hand, didn't do much for me. It's fine, but a lot of it feels like the kind of music you'd hear walking through the aisles of Target.
I did enjoy the themes surrounding Barbie trying to find an identity beyond what society expects of her, alongside Ken discovering that his value isn't defined by Barbie. I just wish the film trusted the audience a little more. At times, it feels like it directly explains its themes instead of letting viewers come to those conclusions themselves.
I also wasn't the biggest fan of how much the film shifted into emotional drama toward the end. I understand why it went in that direction, but I found myself enjoying the movie most when it leaned into its absurd comedy and playful energy.
Overall, Barbie is a really fun watch. It has great performances, beautiful production design, and plenty of clever humor. Even if I wasn't fully on board with every emotional beat, it's still an entertaining film that surprised me in the best way.
