Dunkirk
I knew coming into Dunkirk that it would be Nolan's most different film, and it definitely is. With that in mind, I think it's his weakest film, but that doesn't mean it's bad. It accomplishes exactly what it sets out to do by capturing the feeling of survival. No matter what scene you're watching, there's an overwhelming sense of tension that never lets up.
To me, this is Nolan's best-looking film. The practical effects make it feel like you're witnessing a real war rather than watching a movie. There are so many breathtaking shots throughout, and the sound design is phenomenal. I'm honestly glad I didn't watch this in a theater because I don't think my ears would've survived. The constant roar of the planes, explosions, and gunfire creates an incredibly immersive experience.
The three timelines were a little confusing at first, but once I realized what Nolan was doing, everything clicked. The way the storylines gradually come together is incredibly well done, and it's satisfying when you finally realize how they all connect.
That said, I do have a few major issues. My biggest problem is the lack of character development. I never really formed a connection with anyone on screen. I understand they're soldiers in the middle of a war, but I never learned enough about them to become emotionally invested. While it's satisfying to see them finally make it home, I never felt the emotional weight that I wanted because I didn't have enough time to care about the characters themselves.
I also understand why the film has so little dialogue, but I still wish there had been more. Thankfully, the incredible sound design carries many of those quieter moments, making the silence feel just as intense as the action. Even so, a little more dialogue could've helped me connect with the characters on a deeper level.
Overall, Dunkirk is still a good film. It delivers exactly what it promises with its incredible tension, visuals, and sound design, but the lack of character development keeps it from reaching the heights of Nolan's other films for me.
