Punch-Drunk Love
Punch-Drunk Love is a film full of weirdness, anxiety, love, chaos, and anger, and it somehow balances all of it at once. Seeing Adam Sandler in a somewhat serious role is genuinely crazy. I mean, the man killed it. I was honestly shocked by how many “what the fuck” moments this movie throws at you.
Within the first five minutes alone, you get jumpscared by a truck dropping off a piano, and the chaos never really lets up from there. Every moment feels uncomfortable in the best way. You constantly feel anxiety for Barry because it seems like every second someone is questioning him about this or that. It’s overwhelming, and you completely understand why the guy snaps. Honestly, he deserved to punch a bathroom wall and break a couple of windows.
What really elevates the film for me are two things: the score and the cinematography. I’m a sucker for a good score, and this one absolutely delivers on all cylinders. It constantly feeds into the tension and unease without ever feeling overbearing.
But the cinematography might be the best part. When the camera pans as people keep coming up to Barry, talking at him and crowding his space, it perfectly conveys what he’s feeling internally. It puts you right inside his head. Like, holy shit, I get it’s weird that I have that much pudding, but leave me alone.
Paul Thomas Anderson just cannot miss for me. If this is him firing on all cylinders, then he’s got even more bangers waiting for me to watch.
