Stalker
“Be still, and know that I am God.”
– Psalm 46:11
The film Stalker by Andrei Tarkovsky is, to me, far more than just a cinematic work – it is an experience you truly live through. From the very first minute, it unfolds an atmosphere that is both calm and deeply intense, almost meditative. Tarkovsky manages to create profound depth with minimal means, and that is precisely where the true strength of this film lies.
I especially want to highlight the acting of the main actor, Alexander Kaidanovsky. His performance is simply outstanding. He portrays the Stalker with an intensity and inner conflict that is rarely seen. Without exaggerated gestures or over-the-top emotions, he brings to life a complex character who feels vulnerable, determined, and mysterious at the same time. It is exactly this subtle style of acting that makes his performance so powerful and believable.
I also find the length of the film absolutely perfect. In a time when many films try to get to the point as quickly as possible, Stalker deliberately takes its time – and that is its strength. The quiet, long takes give the viewer space to think and to feel. You are not distracted by rapid cuts or loud effects, but instead can fully immerse yourself in the atmosphere and the philosophical questions.
Silence plays a central role here. There are moments where seemingly nothing happens – and these are exactly the moments that make the film so special. This silence is not empty, but full of meaning. It creates space for interpretation, for personal thoughts and emotions. Tarkovsky shows that film does not only work through dialogue or action, but also through what remains unspoken.
Overall, Stalker is an incredibly good film – perhaps even a masterpiece. Everything feels carefully crafted and harmonious: the visual composition, the pacing, the acting, and the philosophical depth. It is a film that is not simply consumed, but one that lingers, that asks questions, and stays with you long after it ends. To me, everything about this film is simply perfect.
