Weapons
I remember a while back seeing a promotional video for this film on Instagram that was guised as a real news article of kids randomly running out of their houses at night. My first thought was "wtf lol" but it stuck in my head for a while, what the hell was that? Then I saw the first trailer for Weapons and I think this was the first time in my life I was excited for a horror movie.
I was planning on watching Barbarian before this to get myself familiar with the director's style, but I never got around to it, but honestly I don't think I really needed. Right off the atmosphere and tone that's presented is great, the movie does takes its time a bit to really draw you in, but when It does it's hard to let go. The sound design is weighty, and impactful, the framing and direction of shots are full of intention and care, and so many of the horror elements are executed beautifully. I always find myself disappointed or empty watching horror movies cause they never really scare, and to be fair this one wasn't really scary to me either, but events that took place that were meant to evokes fear were so entertaining.
You can tell that this film was made with so much passion, it's one of those moments where you can watch a scene and know that they had a lot of fun filming it. I also really love that character's act and feel realistic, so many horror movies will have actors do an almost restrained reaction to things, but when people in this movie see some horrific shit they react in a satisfying way, they curse uo a storm, they scream their heads, they do a panicky almost faint cry, honestly really good stuff here.
Also the gore is fantastic, knowing the director I knew this wouldn't hold back, a lot of the kills here are really fucking nutty, even scenes with not a lot of blood are kinda eye wincingly painful to look at.
I do have some problems though. As I said in before the beginning kinda has a slow start, and in turn it makes Julie's part of the story kind of unengaging, the scenes kinda feel randomly put together, I only felt truly engaged when Archer's part, It's probably because I needed a bit to get used to the director's style, but I'll probably like it more on a second watch. Another problem I had was that some of the action sequences and the emotional parts with Archer could've been done better.
All in all great movie, definately gonna watch it as soon as I can.
