Alexander
Thank god i watched the director’s cut, i liked it far more than the shortened theatrical version. As a result, i couldn’t care less about the members of the academy who awarded the film six Golden Raspberries. For me, it is one of the most historically accurate films in the entire history of cinema. From the murder of Philip to the death of Hephaistion and the unrests in Macedonia — these are historically correcto events. I give my soul to this work of art. Abcolute bravo!
I was especially impressed by the parallels between Alexander and Olympias, and by the myth of King Oedipus, who killed his father and slept with his mother, as well as the myth of Medea, who murdered her own children. But mostly, i liked the theme of Achilles and Patroclus in Alexander and Hephaistion. In general, i loved the entire intertwining of his life with those cave frescoes his father showed him, frescoes of which he ultimately became a living copy when he nearly killed Roxana.
I was also struck by the special bond between Bucephalus and Alexander, their first and last rides, reminiscent of the myths of Achilles. And i was totally overwhelmed of the Dies Irae motif and the red visual theme during the battle of the Hydaspes. Additionally, the eagle that constantly accompanies him in battle, and in his final struggle for life was a powerful symbol.
I often find myself wondering how far his conquests might have gone if he had lived to old age.
Ave, Prometheus to a man. Et quidem Ἀλέξανδρος ὁ Μέγας.
P.S. I am currently studying Alexander’s empire in history class, and i’m continually amazed by how deftly and delicately Oliver Stone weaves the major milestones of Alexander’s life into the film’s narrative.
