both loved and hated this. At no point did I anticipate the next scene.

Teetering between a 3.5/4. Really liked!!! The good:- takes a tale as familiar as Dracula/orlok/Nosferatu and captures it with a new aesthetic without completely reframing the narrative. Nothing narratively special about any of the changes but very pretty- set design & costumes were beautiful - Lily Rose reallllly shines. Had no idea she could act.- dream sequences are unbelievable- leans into the psychosexual elements of Dracula/Nosferatu instead of just making them subtextual- use of shadows!! those hand scenes!!- visually stunning- final scene incredible body horror- Ralph Ineson is such a special actor and should be in wayyyyy more movies The ?:- unfortunately sometimes I felt that I was watching actors on a screen rather than characters. Aaron Taylor Johnson was such a weak link compared to the rest of the cast. No emotion or gumption to his character. I felt like he made zero acting choices. There was a lack of chemistry between some of the cast, as well. Emma Corrin is one of the best working actors and I didn’t feel that they had a chance to shine, whether that be due to how the character was written or personal choices I’m not sure, but I felt this wasn’t the role for them (Lily was a wonderful lead but I also think Emma could have done wonderfully).- some parts happened very quickly and others dragged a bit- WHY does Count Orlok look like that??? The makeup/costuming designs were soooo odd for him. I felt there was little homage to the original & the face was ultimately forgettable. Why a mustache?? Nosferatu was already creepy and now he just looks like a dude. Felt like I was looking at FX makeup and not a complete character (although his final scene was AMAZING)- why does David Eggers have every young woman he hires get naked?? Tell me that. I’m not a prude about nudity in film but I just think it’s odd that it just keeps on and keeps on. Vampires are literally about sexuality but like…every woman lmao- visually great, narratively jumbled
