The Crash
the crash
RIP dominic russo & davion flanagan 🕊️
the crash is a compelling but ultimately familiar true-crime documentary that examines the tragic case of mackenzie shirilla and the events that transformed a fatal car accident into a murder investigation. at just over 90 minutes, it moved at a brisk pace, weaving together interviews, courtroom footage, and social media evidence to build a gripping narrative.
while the case itself is undeniably fascinating, the documentary leans heavily on the conventions of modern streaming true crime. the dramatic editing, ominous score, and carefully timed reveals create suspense, but they occasionally feel more interested in keeping viewers hooked than providing deeper analysis. some aspects of the investigation and broader context are touch on only briefly, leaving the film feeling more like an overview than a comprehensive examination.
even so, the crash succeeds in highlight in g the devastating human cost of the case and raises thought-provoking questions about toxic relationship, digital footprints, and the challenges of determining intent in criminal investigations. it’s an engaging watch for true-crime fans, but it doesn’t break much new ground in an increasingly crowded genre. 3/5 ⭐️
