Perfect Blue
I went into this film not knowing anything about the plot, and just knew it was highly praised. The movie blew me away, even though it was made in 1997 I feel like it is more relevant today than it was when it was released. It delivers a masterclass in visual storytelling. Within one shot in the opening scene, it fully captures Me-Mania's character and what we need to know about his view on Mima. The use of red in this movie is also extraordinary, as Mima's sanity and life seems to spiral out of control the color red is always there as a symbol. Symbolism is very key in this film and I loved how they used mirror/window reflections, her house, and the film she's working on to tell the story. The surrealness of the film was done perfectly, constantly making me guess and question what's real and what isn't. This guessing game only further immersed me into the film. I really enjoyed the themes Satoshi Kon created this movie for. Perfect Blue analyzes Mima's crumbling identity and loss of self as she transitions from pop idol to actress. It also shows how some people are not able to distinguish the public perception of Mima and the private real life of Mima and what they'd do to bring back "The Real Mima". I also think giving us time to be with Mima before things spiral only make this psychological thriller more engaging and much more haunting. I cannot wait to watch this movie again so I can see the little details I missed on first watch!!
