The Lighthouse
Still one of the best looking films I’ve ever seen. The lighting and cinematography are impeccable. Pattinson and Dafoe are both exceptional and this must be up there with their best performances for both. The haunting soundtrack and sound effects created an eerie sense of uneasiness throughout. What really impressed me though with this film is its ability to reel you in and make you feel like you’re really there. I felt like I was back in the 1890s. I felt the same entrapment that the characters feel. Even the aspect ratio for a start makes you feel trapped from the off. Throughout the film we lose a sense of time with the drunken montages, and a sense of what is real and what isn’t, which makes the viewing experience all the more disorientating. It’s a great feeling finding a new film that you really enjoy but when it’s a hidden gem like this it hits different.
