Arrival
I don’t ever write spoilers for reviews but this might be the first…
I truly think this is one of the greatest SCI-Fi movies ever created, wow, wow, wow. I originally thought it was a bit slow, no climax nothing but after the end it just clicked. She’s essentially Eren Yeager.
“If you learn it, when you really learn it, you begin to perceive time the way that they do. So you can see what's to come. But time, it isn't the same for them. It's non-linear."
When she learned the language of the aliens she was able to see time non linearly. To be able to see the past and the future and to not necessarily tap into it but to influence it and see it differently. The beginning of the movie where we see the child sick and die with cancer is actually in the future after she gets married to Ian after the incident with the aliens. She leaves clues in the future so that her past self can see these things and stop China and Co from fighting an all out war against the aliens. We see it with the word her daughters looking for but can’t remember “Zero-Sum game”. We also see it with her daughter’s toys, the alien figure and also finally with the conversation with China’s president towards the end.
The reasons the movie was so confusing is because we were expecting it to be “linear”. Watching it in chronological events, But we’re Viewing it in a way she sees it after learning the language. The way the aliens see it, non linearly. The more I think about the movie the more it just starts to click. One of the best one off SCI-Fi movies of all time. I think Denis Did a wonderful job. And I’ll continue to come back to this time and time again.
This is one of the movies where I contemplate what was going through the creators minds when conjuring up this idea. And what psychedelics they were one. Nonetheless…
Honorable mention: Those alien character designs. One of the most unique I’ve ever seen in my life. Perfect.
The review sucks but it’s all I can conjure for now. Random thoughts splurged.
“If you could see your whole life from start to finish, would you change things?“
