Ip Man
This movie is so freaking brutal and depressing. The huge contrast of color before and after the Japanese take over is so jarring it immediately forces the viewer to feel like they too carry the weight of dread. The cinematography is amazing as is the camera work but the story and purpose behind each fight strikes the heartstrings. Ip Man was just some guy who was known for being the all powerful yet laid back guy that people respected but as soon as the Japanese took over he and everyone else lost their position of property and respect. Their way of life can never be the way it was before in luxury. I do find this movie difficult to watch because I am half Japanese and seeing my people and culture as the villain is upsetting but it’s all true. The Japanese weren’t always the good guys. The Japanese were extremely cruel and awful and they would do whatever it took to lay supremacy over their neighboring land. We saw the governmental differences in power and it was odd to see a government powerhouse wanting to do Japanese Karate vs Chinese Kung-Fu for pride but it fit well enough for the premise of the film. Those who have seen it know how impactful the
1 vs 10 fight was. Pure yet quiet rage unleashed. It was a sight to see that you want to look away but just can’t. I love this movie even though it’s not that great in leaving the viewer completely satisfied.
