Donnie Darko
I dont know what to say, During the whole movie I tried to understand what was happening but I'm still very confused so now I will read all the reviews, I will search for explanations on Google and I will watch edits on tik tok to make sense of what I saw!
EDIT:
Ok, I just watched a YouTube video and the first thing that came to mind was: definitely five stars. I'm still not sure what to say—there’s so much to discuss and so many themes involved. I totally agree this is a masterpiece, and those who don’t understand it are simply those who don’t want to understand it.
Donnie’s character is truly incredible. He’s the one labeled as “crazy,” but in reality, he’s the most authentic of them all. He saved the universe—and he chose to do it. Despite his fear and all the sacrifices, he fulfilled his destiny.
The movie talks about fate, and I agree with its message. I believe we all have a destiny. Maybe you don’t see it right away, but there comes a moment when you start to understand. And yes, you do have free will—you can choose to ignore it—but doing so distances you from your true self. It can also lead to loneliness and even make you a worse person.
I think the greatest realization of ourselves happens when we choose to fulfill our destiny—our mission, the plan the universe entrusted to us. And that’s exactly what Donnie did. He had a choice, but his refusal would have led to Gretchen’s death—one of the few real, meaningful connections he had. If things had continued like that, everything would have fallen apart.
And he didn’t want that. He didn’t want to be alone, and he didn’t want to die—but that loneliness, that final sacrifice, was necessary. If he had done nothing, the world would have ended. Instead, he chose to die alone, in silence, so that others could live. That’s what makes his choice so powerful.
In fact, he was saved by the rabbit at the beginning—and that rabbit is a symbol of a new reality, a new journey, just like in Alice in Wonderland. Donnie was being guided the whole time. He was never truly alone, and that’s what rabbits do in Alice: they lead you somewhere new.
Another interesting point: the pills Donnie was taking turned out to be placebos. This raises the question—is Donnie really crazy? Because throughout the film he behaves in irrational and unusual ways, but in the end, he fulfills his purpose and saves the world. Meanwhile, other characters—the Italian teacher, the science teacher, the motivational speaker at school—are the ones who actually behave strangely or even harmfully.
It’s a thought-provoking film, and I believe the more you explore it and read about its symbolism, references, and critiques, the more you understand its depth. That’s what makes it a true masterpiece.
