Donnie Darko

i could talk about this movie for hours & still never run out of things to say. it just means so SO much to me, and i genuinely don't know who i'd be without its presence in my life! of course, i have to start by mentioning that the film's explorations into its many themes (ex: sacrifice, love and fear, destiny, & the human condition, just to name a few) are incredibly rich and so well-done! the sci-fi / time travel aspects are great too, but the emotional core of donnie darko comes from the universal, human experience-based elements that are embedded in each & EVERY creative choice. if you take time to analyze this film, you can get a sense of how densely layered it is when it comes to thematic messages. however, even if the film does confuse you, it will not fail to make you FEEL, and i think there's something so special about that. along with this, the cinematography is fantastic, the soundtrack and score are frankly unbeatable, the horror aspects are equally beautiful & unnerving, the coming-of-age elements work incredibly well, and jake gyllenhaal's acting performance here is good beyond WORDS. he's one of my favorite people ever, so i may be a tiny bit biased, but he's definitely one of the best actors to ever exist. this film is proof of that. there is so much more to say, but i'd never be able to do this film justice. most of us on this app know it's a masterpiece. easily one of my favorites of all time <3 every single rewatch is a gift.
