Sing Sing
I went to a performing arts high school for theatre. Never done any acting before then, but been a huge fan of plays and musicals so I went into the audition and thought "what the hell, why not?" Well, I got in, one of 10 students. The only one who had done 0 theatre beforehand. And there I was all four years of high school. It was an hour drive away from my house, but we were able to do it. And that was my thing for four years of high school. In the morning, I was doing the usual: math, science, English, history, etc. but from 12-3, I was working in the black box theatre, designing and creating. I never considered myself an actor, in fact I was pretty stage nervous a lot of the time, but it allowed me to connect with people and a part of myself that I never could before. And for the same handful of people across all four years, we really got to know each other quite well. Same teacher too.
Well, I'm in college now. I don't study theatre anymore like many of my classmates, probably to the dismay of my teacher. But that never leaves you. What acting and theatre brings out in people is necessary for everyone. Connection with other people, connection with their emotions, it's essential. As a 13 year old with so much anxiety, going to a school an hour away where I knew literally nobody, theatre was what gave me a home. Theatre was what gave me a voice to now pursue my own (other) interests in college.
Why did I spill my life's story into one movie review? Because that's what this movie is. It's about life, it's about theatre, it's about found communities that come in it. Sharing the joys, sorrows, pain, humor, everything with your ensemble in that space. This is a phenomenal movie, period. I connected with it on a personal note but I think anyone would be able to.
Guys this movie is really good.
