Annihilation
is it just me that thinks this is such a cute love story?
lena and kane are seen going through a rough patch in their relationship before kane goes on his secret mission. kane knew lena was cheating on him, but he didn't confront her, because he didn't want to let her go. this is evident when he tells his doppelgänger to go find lena, since he is unable to go himself. he still cares for her, and her affair seems like such a small issue now compared to what he's been through.
fake kane clearly has real Kane's memories, because he found and identified lena. in a sense, fake kane is real kane in every aspect but physical experience. fake lena is the same too, she has lena's memories, knows what lena felt and thought in those memories, but she is detached from the original lena because she didn't actually go through her experiences herself. lena and kane go through the shimmer and come out changed, supposedly aliens, but they still come back to each other in the end, and embrace the other.
you could say the whole alien aspect takes a back seat in this film as its main focus is to show the power of connection and relationships. for lena and kane, all of the cheating, alien mind fuckery, and reconstructing of their DNA is second to their love for each other. that love is what got them in to the shimmer and it is that same love, only stronger and more self assured now, they left the shimmer with. to love is to change, or something corny like that.
