Interstellar
96/100
The single best movie of all time with the single best soundtrack of all time.
Interstellar has phenomenal pacing. It's honestly just so impressive that they managed to fit in that much information, that many events, multiple climaxes, multiple twists and more, without it feeling unnaturally fast. This of course massively helps doing the plot justice. Because the plot really doesn't deserve bad pacing. The story is simply too phenomenal for it to be strained by such s thing.
Though to be fair, the plot starts out feeling pretty average. However it's important to remember we recieve a lot of important information that's used later in the plot during this part of the movie. Luckily the plot truly becomes amazing not that far into the movie when Murph and Cooper exchange their final conversation before Cooper's departure. From there on out, it just gets more and more amazing which all contribute to a mind-blowing and mind-boggling climax that i have yet to see be matched. And that's not even touching on how emotional and traguc this movie at times and how desperately you feel the pain of the characters.
I've already touched a bit on the execution, but i just want to drag out how well executed the movie is. I mean when you're making a movie with this sort of concept and story it's obvious that you'd want Hans Zimmer to compose the soundtrack. Just to let the movie move marginally closer to perfection. And not only did he compose the soundtrack - wait actually, I want to rephrase that. Not only did he produce his greatest soundtrack, he produced the greatest soundtrack of all time.
This has already contributes massively to the execution, but it doesn't stop there. Christopher Nolan researched for years to make this movie as scientifically accurate as possible, and he even gave us some of the most stunning CGI I've ever seen.
This is really just executed to absolute perfection.
Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway did a terrific job as Cooper and Brand. But they both have so many high level performances, so i actually want to focus my praise onto Jessica Chastain. Her portrayal of Murph (adult) was beyond great. In multiple scenes she managed to portray the heartbreak Murph experiences with such skill that it truly touched me and made me emotional. Especially when paired with an equally skillful performance by Matthew McConaughey.
Generally the cast all delivered impressive performances. And not only does the cast include Anne Hathaway and Matthew McConaughey, it also includes the likes of Matt Damon and Michael Caine as well as Timothée Chalamet, although before he had his massive breakthrough.
This impressive cast helps the amazing characters be just that bit more amazing. Both Cooper, Murph and Brand are motivated by love. It's their biggest strength, but also their biggest flaw. In the end however, love is what saves them all. The love Murph and Cooper shares is what makes sure Murph returns for the watch (so no it's not unexplained why love is the reason that the plot meets its resolution, watch the movie again). Though i could've wished for a more fleshed out Tom, even though his character is still good. Luckily this tiny annoyance is massively made up for with Professor Brand (not to be confused with the female character I've referenced as Brand throughout) and Dr. Mann that are both phenomenal characters, even though their role is relatively small.
Even logically this movie rarely makes a mistake. As stated previously, Nolan spent years to make this movie as scientifically accurate as possible. And the logic within the plot also wraps up nicely, although in a paradox. But that's obviously intended and if you count that as a flaw, you must think Nolan is incredibly stupid. No one doesn't understand that the situation the plot centers around is a paradox.
Conceptually the movie is still amazing. But it's truly the execution and originality of both the concept and execution that takes this movie to the next level. Out of Nolan's hands, this concept would probably just have been a great movie. But he really made it almost perfect.
For the plots ending it wraps up with the previously mentioned mind-boggling scene. After that we get a heartfelt few minutes before the plot again opens up to give us an open ending.
I really enjoyed the ending, though i would've liked Tom to be included (in a way this goes back to my critique of him not being fleshed out), but a part from that I'm really happy with the ending. Because i feel like it stays true to Cooper's character, rather than forcing a happy "we're all together and saved the world" ending.
I truly hope I'll get to experience something like this again.
