taylor russell is my soft spoken baddie and i need to see her in more movies. the script was so good i was surprised to read about how the writer didn’t initially see it as a black american family. that being said, i personally cant speak about how accurate this is to the black experience. like ofc not everything has to be about race, but i think it’s important to acknowledge that growing up poc obviously shapes your thinking. therefore i wish more depth went into these characters regarding their race rather than subtext and like that one use of the n word. like i wish there was more nuance to it, not necessarily obvious allusions to the black experience. i think it was so cool they had the music planned out while writing and storyboarding though. like the soundtrack is amazing and it really ties the entire film together. the camera work and color grading was also very reminiscent of euphoria but idk maybe alexa demie being in it already reminded me of euphoria. i thought the aspect ratio change was interesting. lowkey too many 360 pan shots like i was so dizzy. overall i think it was a good exploration on toxic masculinity and its impacts on everyone. the second part of the movie will always have a special place with me. i love how healing and gentle it is. like despite the pain you go through you can still find love and acceptance.
