Chinatown
Really my introduction into the classic neo-noir masterpieces that were created during the 60’s and 70’s, but this film in particular just exceeds that genre. With the complex and intricate plot, the moral ambiguity surrounded around several characters, then an unsettling and haunting atmosphere was an unbelievable experience watching this for the first time.
Undoubtedly one of the best screenplays ever written. Sharpest pieces of dialogue you’ll rarely ever see again, captivates cynicism perfectly honestly. Then you have Polanski just peacefully and precisely unravelling the plot in the most subtle and intriguing ways imaginable. Another timeless masterclass of a film that really fits any time period with the many complex underlying themes portrayed. Such as the dark underbelly of the city’s seemingly glamorous facade, the brutal nature of the world, and the system is slippery which leads to the truth getting buried beneath layers of lies and deception.
Mr John Alonzo what a cinematographer you are, creating a sense of unease that diffuses every scene with a golden freedom dusk feel.. truly stunning work. From this down to the production design it perfectly mirrors the moral complexities of the story. Need to look into some more Polanski films.
“Forget it Jake.. It’s Chinatown.”
