The Monkey
This is a bloody, fun movie.
I feel like this is what Oz Perkins was building towards. His style, writing, directing and parental themes all work well with the material. The main theme of fathers passing down “evil” to their kids is all over the film, unlike Longlegs, and ties well with the idea of finding an evil monkey in your dad’s closet.
I mentioned Longlegs because that film created a good story about what parents would do (and hide) from their children in under to protect them, but failed at creating the “Silence of the Lamb-ish” plot they sold from the trailers.
This film blends in the material, main plot, and theme so perfectly, it creates a fast-paced story that doesn’t end too soon or too late.
It may not answer all the questions, like where does it monkey come from?, but it is an enjoyable film to have a good time.
